How I Stay Motivated
How I Stay Motivated
One of my favorite things is to hear how other people stay motivated. I love hearing what works for other people and what new things I can add to my routine to continue chasing after my goals like my life depends on it. There are a lot of reasons why people give up. Fear of failure or fear of what to do if you are successful. For most people, change is difficult and it's easier to stick with what's familiar (especially when you're not sure what to do). My weakness is being impatient. I get frustrated and want to give up when I don't see results as soon as I am hoping for.
You've seen the memes.
Me: Eats one salad.
Also Me: Why haven't I lost ten pounds.
We laugh at that because we have all felt that way before. We get frustrated that after putting in everything we've got we don't see results.
We all want to achieve our goals but let our own version of an excuse hold us back. Letting that thing have power over your goal will keep you as far from reaching it as it possibly can. Choosing to take that control back allows you to acknowledge it as an excuse and choose to power through.
There are several times where I feel inadequate to do this. Like my dreams are too big. The truth is, those things are only true if I live into them. If I let myself choose those excuses for my future, that's all that will become of me. I will live the same life year after year without ever getting closer to my dreams.
Make a mental list of all of the dreams you've wanted to accomplish in the past year. What did you do in the past year to get closer to them? Reaching a goal means change. An accomplishment requires change.
The key to reaching your goals through all of this change and perseverance is to stay motivated.
Here are a five things I personally do to keep myself motivated, even when I absolutely want to give up.
I keep my vision in front of me. I talk about it. I write about it. I envision what my life will look like one I have reached this goal. I keep it at the forefront of my mind everyday.
I start every day with something to get me closer to my goals. One of my goals is to become a published author. Every morning from 5:15-5:45 I am at my kitchen table writing. If your goal is to lose weight, a good idea would be to start your morning off with a workout or a healthy breakfast. Whatever your goal is make sure you are starting your day off right by taking one step closer to your goals. Doing this in the morning will help keep your vision in front of you.
I choose to look my best. I am not always great at this one-especially on the weekends. However, I know how important it is. Did you know that research shows that student's behavior and grades are better on picture day? Still don't think looking your best is important? When you look your best, you feel your best. You feel more confident and able to take on any goal. I heard on a podcast once that you should "dress how you want others to treat you." It way eye-opening. I had never thought about it that way. If I want others to see me as confident, creative, funny, loving, and knowledgeable, I can't be walking around in yoga pants and a t-shirt from 10th grade youth camp all week long.
Eat healthy. There are so many benefits to eating healthier. I am no fitness/health guru nor am I perfect at this. What I can tell you is that when I eat more home cooked meals and less fast food, my body feels amazing. Not only do I physically feel better, but I emotionally feel better. The food you eat powers your brain. This is important for everyone, not just creatives. Why wouldn't you want your brain to be operating at it's best on a daily basis? For me, eating healthy isn't so much about weight loss as it is about treating my body the best I can and in turn being able to perform at my top level.
I consume motivation on a daily basis. There isn't a single day that goes by that I haven't listened to a podcast, read a book, or watched a video purely to motivate me. It's the easiest way to stay motivated. I know it's a hard concept. But stick with me here. Listening to something motivational will make you more motivated!
I hope that these steps to staying motivated help you on your journey to crushing your goal. I'd love to hear what you do to stay motivated, leave a comment below and share your wealth of goal digging wisdom!
